Details

In 2021, the Association undertook a policy research project that involved a scan of Canada's top 150 cities ranked by population to evaluate each municipality on the friendliness of their bylaws and other factors critical to the operation of food trucks within each jurisdiction.

We would like to leverage this research, and intersect this data with other available datasets to build a highly beneficial BI Suite from which reports can be built for both elected representatives as well as for food truck operators.

Additional datasets are as follows:

  • SIMPLYANALYTICS (or Environics): https://www.library.yorku.ca/web/bbl/wp-content/uploads/sites/8/2012/06/SimplyAnalytics_Guide.pdf or other market research data
  • StatsCan, Census 2021, and other available OpenData datasets (recommendations welcome)
  • Elected representative data from sources such as https://represent.opennorth.ca/api/ (may require polynomial mapping for electoral riding boundaries, or the use of a postal code conversion file (PCCF)
Deliverables
  • Conduct a review of the existing data to determine how to best leverage this data and for which audience (i.e. market data for food truck operators, or correlative data to present to policymakers
  • Efforts to understand of the unique needs of food trucks, and what data might enable them to make better business decisions
  • Efforts to understand the imbalance of fair policy for mobile food vendors to date and how data can help to build the case for legislative reform. SEE: https://www.competitionbureau.gc.ca/eic/site/cb-bc.nsf/eng/04260.html

This project can be broken out into phases based on any time restrictions or the skill level of the students. A first phase for this project might be a scoping review to make recommendations of which datasets might be the most useful given the data that's been pulled to date.

Current data that's been pulled has been entered into a database instance at www.airtable.com.

Mentorship

We are only too happy to provide:

  • A briefing document along with a facilitated overview of the important themes and needs for the project
  • Any key messages, target audiences, and available creative assets to help them understand the brand
  • A single point of contact (POC) assigned to your course and students, with a team of experts available for questions
  • Access to Slack, Google Workspace, and some other project management tools. We welcome the students so they can feel as though they are part of the team, or at arm's length - whatever is best.
  • *For those running courses outside of Canada*, we'll provide guidance and direction for the students to better understand the Canadian business (and geographical) landscape, along with openly available sources of data that could be useful in making their assessments.
  • Recognition of the school's involvement and the students' work in a media release (if permitted) and attribution of the students' contributions via LinkedIn or references as required.

An agile approach has been taken and we are now looking to redefine how we can best start and grow to support the industry. It is critically important to us to provide real and lasting value to our members.

Projects that are taken on by students and courses in the Riipen platform will be instrumental in our ability to build capacity to deliver that value.
To date, the work of the Food Trucks Association of Canada has been led by a volunteer Executive Director who is a passionate advocate in this space, and has leveraged a 75% student body of employees made available through various employment subsidies. It is a key part of our mandate to support student learning.

The NAICS code for the Food Trucks is 7223 and other code subsets.
